Do you remember Cassette tapes?  MiniDisks?  CD's?

Over the last 20 + years that I've been running classes the music industry has changed beyond belief and it's still bit of a pinch me moment that I can load playlists onto my phone and carry my bluetooth speakers in my handbag 😱

However, if you've assumed that you'll be using Spotify to build your lovely music playlists to use in your classes, playlists full of music you have found on that platform, please make sure you understand the legal implications of using those Spotify playlists in a commercial setting ie your classes before you play a single note

Spotify, along with other similar streaming services ie Apple Music, is designed for personal use only. When you sign up for Spotify, you agree to their terms and conditions, which explicitly state that the service is for non-commercial, personal use. Here’s why:

  1. Licensing Agreements: Spotify has licensing agreements with record labels and artists that cover personal use only. Commercial use falls under a different category of licensing, which Spotify does not provide.

  2. Royalty Payments: Artists and rights holders are compensated differently when their music is used commercially. Personal streaming services like Spotify don’t account for this type of usage, meaning the creators aren’t being fairly paid for their work when their music is played in businesses.

  3. Copyright Law: Playing music in a commercial setting without the appropriate licenses is a violation of copyright law. This can result in hefty fines and legal action against your business.

So what can you do instead?

If you don't own your own music then maybe it's time to have a look at

  • Licence free music ie ichillmusic
  • Buying music via iTunes/Amazon but you must have a Music Licence from PPL/PRS to legally play that music in your classes
  • Switching to Spotify Business Soundtrackyourbusiness at a cost of £35 per month but you still need The Music Licence from PPL/PRS
  • Investing in getting your own music written and recorded
  • Training with Nurture Sounds and getting access to our music - 50 MP4 downloads in the Baby Music Class Method and 35 in the Baby Class Blueprint - which you can use with no restrictions within your classes and do not need any additional licences to use.

I hope this has been helpful to you.  It is an area I am passionate about as a music creator who has had their content used without permission by another business which is why none of my music can be found on any streaming services.
